Millennial Retention: How HR Director Nurtures Employee Development Like a Company with 10x its Resources

When we sat down and talked with Jessica Chronchio, Human Resources Director of Motus, a Boston tech company specializing in vehicle management and reimbursement software, we were blown away by the unique ways this company has grown from 5 to 90 people and how it retains its employees. The HR programs this company has are more commonly found in giant firms with thousands of employees. How do they do it? Read on…

Jessica Shares The Secret to Actually Reaching 100% Millennial Retention

“At Motus we have something really unique called the Talent Accelerator Program (TAP). It’s specially designed for recent grads and folks with less than two years of professional experience. TAP is primarily client-facing, so new grads end up learning a ton about how we communicate with our clients and what we do for them. Through the powerful two years of the program, they’re working on projects for various departments including sales, marketing, customer care and finance. This broad exposure helps them confidently decide what kind of work they want to do when they graduate from the program.

To date, millennial retention throughout the course has been 100% and has been a huge success. Everyone who has been through TAP loves it and thinks it’s pretty unique, especially for a startup. Once participants are done, they carve out their own path and figure out where they want to go – with us supporting them every step of the way.  I did it when I joined the company and I can confidently say from my experience that it’s an amazing training tool that taught me so much about our business and led me to my now senior position.”

An Uncommon, Subtle Tactic for Finding New Talent

“One thing that’s undeniably special about Motus is our quarterly event series where speakers come in and talk to us about a variety of timely and relevant topics. Right now the topic is “managing stress in your life at work and in your personal life”. We really encourage people to invite their whole network – their family and friends outside of Motus.

Even though it’s not technically a recruiting event, we love having the opportunity to greet new faces, learn about new opportunities, and get our name out there in an unstuffy way. And if we meet someone who’d be a good match for Motus, that can’t hurt, right?”

Employees Live Fulfilled Lives Inside and Outside The Office

“One of our core values is ‘working healthy’, so we invest a lot of effort around promoting strong minds and bodies. In the summer we have an outdoor yoga series and are now prepping for a three-week meditation series. We enjoy lots of team workouts and have a corporate sponsorship with a gym, giving employees discounted memberships. Employees enjoy challenging one another with the Fitbit they receive on their first day.”
