Motus Trades in Cubicles for Floor to Ceiling Windows, Stunning Views and Incomparable Flexibility

Looking to invest in your company’s culture and attract new talent? Jessica Chronchio, HR Director at tech company Motus, shares how they’re attracting and retaining top talent in one of the country’s most competitive job markets–Boston. Before they could start building culture, they needed to start with building a beautiful and collaborative workspace, then giving employees the power to choose – for themselves – where they do their best work.

We Stand by and Watch Their Jaws Hit the Floor

“One of the reasons why we moved into downtown Boston was to position ourselves so we can recruit top new talent. We knew a lot of those people would be living in the city and wouldn’t want to commute outside of the city. When people visit our new office space for the first time, we quietly stand by and watch while their jaws hit the floor–it’s absolutely stunning. Our cubicle-filled suburban office felt stuffy, so our people happily embraced the change in scenery. It’s probably the best thing we’ve done and it has totally paid off.”

Motus Makes You Feel at Home

“We have a huge cafe with tons of snacks, a wine fridge, and a stocked beverage refrigerator with TVs all around. This is where restaurants come in and serve lunch to our employees.

We have a variety of workspaces where people can take their laptop if they don’t want to sit at a desk. It feels like home. We created a place where collaboration can happen naturally, from intimate team meetings to the buzz of our quarterly meetings. People are happy and they’re sticking around, so I’d say it’s working pretty well!”

A Top Floor Office Built for Happiness and Mobility

“One of our core values is “Working Happy”. It stems from all of the things we offer our employees, including perks, different benefits, and our innovative office space. Motus employees feel energized when coming into work and feel like they have everything they need to help them grow day-to-day. That’s what working happy is, and our impressive workspace is a big piece of that.

The Motus office space spans the top floor and overlooks downtown Boston with floor to ceiling windows showcasing spectacular views. We intentionally don’t have cubicles and there aren’t a lot of offices, only C-level executives sit in offices now, so it’s a big open workspace that’s really meant to generate teamwork and communication. It’s very fluid in order to foster mobility. This whole idea of moving around is really what Motus is all about.”

Working Smarter, Not Harder

“Working Smart – another one of our core values – acknowledges and respects that everyone has a personal life and it’s important to us to create flexible work schedules and give people the tools they need to be successful at their jobs. You’ll collaborate with your manager and team to figure out what’s going to work best for you. We’re a results driven organization so we look at what you’re producing and don’t really care where you do your best work–If that’s here in the office or if it’s at home or on a beach. If you’re putting the business first and thinking about your team and what’s going to be best for them, then work where you want to work. As long as you’re working smart.

For example, we have a new mom who is in the office two days a week and works the other three days completely from home. We sat down with her and asked what flexibility will work best for her and had her define her role with her team. Setting these expectations up front as a team has lead to her success and are the things that we have to consider because it has to work for the business.”

A Tip for New Motus Employees

“On the first day, new employees assume the office is going to be loud because it’s so open. They quickly learn this isn’t the case. When they see they can easily roll their seat over to the person next to them to get a quick opinion, or stand up and chat with three people on the other side of their workstation, they realize how easy it is to be productive. It naturally and organically helps people collaborate more, without being disruptive to others. People who aren’t used to open workspaces are a little weary at first, but they quickly come to love it.”
